Between Blinks

The needles on the tree were pretty much dry by now. The lights were still bright, but some of the glow had dimmed. You could one see the tree stand which was concealed only a few hours ago by the boxes covered in brilliant Christmas paper with scissor teased ribbon & hand tied bows. "Silver Bells" & "Silent Night" no longer dominated the radio waves. It was time for the "New Year."

The announcement had been made at church several weeks before. It was called "Watch Night Service." Starting times varied, and the content of the service was filled with a variety of elements. Of course, there was prayer, congregational singing, and "testimonies" were scattered in among the mix of the programming.

As the last minute or so of the old year ticked off of the clock, the prayer would begin that would connect the old year to the new. Sometimes the prayers were loud, and sometimes there was an atmosphere of sacred quietness. There would almost always be a feeling of well-being as we gathered up our belongings, put on our coats, and exited the building.

Here we are again, keenly aware of the clicking of the clock as it marks the closing of 2013. 2013 - almost foreign words to those of us who remember other years and the nights as we "watched" the year end. As we quickly approach this seemingly never ending cycle, we would do well to remind ourselves of another impending changing of time.

The stark reality of the most significant "time changer" needs to be considered along with thinking of the quick approach new year, which, by the way, will pass in short order. I somehow doubt if this forever event happens with the hour, minute, and second hands all coming into alignment on the number 12 at the top of a clock.

Rest assured my dear friend, it will happen. God says it in His Message to us in the Bible. "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."(1 Corinthians 15:52) Now that will be a clock stopper, a "nothing will ever be the same" moment.

Some will know immediately what has taken place as the reports start coming in on the mass disappearances. Some say that graves will actually open in a similar fashion as the large rock that was displaced when Jesus stepped out of His borrowed grave. I certainly think that would be a nice "touch" to the event, further revealing to those who were once taught about something called the "resurrection" of what it was that just happened. Who could even imagine the horror and despair that will sweep over people in a tidal wave of realization that the rapture has just taken place?

My father-in-law, in his Christmas admonition to his family concluded his remarks by saying, "just be ready." He reminded us again of what God said to us, "... be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." (Matthew 24:44) It was a serious word, but appropriate.

I sincerely believe that 2014 will be an eventful year. No one knows its exact content except The Lord Himself, but plan on it, big things are ahead. There is nothing that will be more important to us personally than our need to be prepared - personally prepared for whatever The Lord has in store. Are you ready? I mean to say, are you ready for the all time clock-stopper for you - personally? Someone asked,  "Is this the last generation?" The confident answer was given, "For you it is." The familiar declaration in our childhood game of Hide and Seek will soon be played out, "Ready or not, here I come." Except, there will be no declaration, no warning, or notice. He will just come - Between Blinks.

Adana and I are praying for you and with you. I am believing that our large family of friends across this land are praying for us, too. Let's get ready. Let's stay ready. As 2014 comes in, and flashes before us, let us RE-ENGAGE in the most noble of causes. Let us RE-INVEST our mind, body, and soul in promoting the Kingdom of God. Let us RE-NEW our faith and confidence in The Lord. He is faithful.

An Attitude Of Gratitude

An Attitude Of Gratitude
(From the November 2013 Heartland America Newsletter)

“Every experience God gives us, every person he puts in our lives, is the perfect preparation for the future that only he can see.” ~ Corrie Ten Boom

The world that most of us live in is like one long super-highway experience. Everything and everybody is moving at break-neck speed. I keep this snapshot in my mind of how it was in some of the large cities we have passed through over the years. You had to be aware—all the time—of where you were, which lane you needed to be in, and who was coming at you. The entrance ramps to the freeway systems were launching pads more than anything else.
While serving in California, where we were prone to travel long distances between our visits, Adana and I came to sort of a “traveling” agreement. She would drive on the open roads, and I would take over when we hit the outskirts of the large cities. I can almost hear the snap of the seat belt buckle, and the surge of the engine as I   entered one of those launching ramps that would propel us into a flurry of vehicles, all of which were going somewhere  - fast! This was a time for “present tense” concentration.
I have come to the conclusion that our sense of NOW  (the present) is the most fleeting part of our life. In one sense, our present represents the shortest frame of reality for us.  Our NOW is constantly being pushed by the past, and the pulled by our future. It is a fact that we cannot hold on to the present, for, in the blink of an eye, it becomes our past, and we are literally being flung into the future.
It is not my intention to get into some sort of a whole life philosophy discussion. It is, however, my full intention to emphasize the truth of valuing the NOW in our life. Corrie Ten Boom’s statement above holds within it a powerful truth. First, God has a perfect plan for us.
It is a certainty that our Heavenly Father goes about prepping us for His plan for our life in a most interesting manner. I am convinced that He brings GOOD into our lives and allows BAD to touch us through our experience with the people that cross our paths throughout our life.
Oh, how sweet are the thoughts of the now hundreds and hundreds of people that have come through my life that have blessed me so much. Their tenderness, generosity, kindness, and thoughtfulness is like a spring of life-giving water that nourishes and refreshes my heart and life on a daily basis.
And, oh, how bitter tasting are my memories of the few that offered the opposite of all the positive and powerful qualities that I mentioned above. Their harshness, deception, trickery, and rejection still pierces my soul. I fully admit the unkind words, and their calculating, and scheming ways, still bring a shudder to my spirit. And, a “Why” flashes into my mind when I think of how hard I worked, and how much I sacrificed to gain their favor and respect, only to be the recipient of their spiteful ways.
I am remembering those “Now” moments here. The vast majority of those fleeting now moments brings a softness to my heart, and an unspoken “thank you” follows quickly behind those memories.  Those hurtful moments, however, may well have been my best life teacher.
How can we truly appreciate the goodness of life that comes through people unless we have something in sharp contrast with which to compare them. How can we truthfully, in all sincerity, have a positive ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE if we haven’t experienced the emotion and pain of rejection? How can we truly enjoy the warm glow of summer’s sunlight unless we have some recollection of bite of winter’s icy breath?
Corrie Ten Boom may have received a point of knowledge and inspiration from the Apostle Paul’s comment in Romans 8: 28. Paul said... “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

"… And we know"
This verse in the Bible introduces a source of consolation and support drawn from the fact that all things are under the direction of an infinitely wise Being who has purposed the salvation of the Believer, and who has appointed ALL THINGS that they shall contribute to that purpose.

"… all things"
This includes all our afflictions and trials; all the persecutions and calamities to which we are exposed. Though they are many, and long-continued, yet they are among the means that are appointed for our welfare.

"… work together for good"
They shall cooperate; they shall mutually contribute to our good. They take away our affections from this world; they teach us truth about our frail, temporary condition; they lead us to look to God for support, and to heaven for a final home; and they produce a subdued spirit, a humble outlook, a patient, tender, and kind disposition. This has been the experience of all true believers; and at the end of life they have been able to say it was good for them to have been molded by the hard things in life.

"… to them that love God"
This is characteristic of true Christianity. To this person, afflictions will prove to be blessings. To others, they often prove otherwise. On others they are seen as chastisements; and they produce complaining; instead of peace, rebellion; instead of submission, anger, impatience, and hatred, instead of calmness, patience and love. We must apply ourselves to understanding these principles that we may maintain an attitude of gratitude.

I want to conclude my comments by saying that Adana and I have enjoyed our work in Heartland America. We love this part of the world that offers so much diversity. We love the seasons of the year. But, most of all, we have enjoyed the love of the people of the Heartland. The only attitude that I have regarding our work together is one of true gratitude. What an honor it is to work side by side with our pastors and church family.

We pray that you will have a blessed Thanksgiving season with your family and your friends. Enjoy the NOW moments for they will soon be the past. Make good memories by speaking hope and life.

A Bonus Blessing

Every once in a while someone will offer to pray for me, but today it was different.

We always enjoy our visits to our Heartland Churches. It's not the size of the church that matters or, the building that houses our worshippers. It's the people. Just ordinary people doing what they know to do to please that Lord. Today, a bonus blessing awaited me as the service came to a close.

The distance to the church was longer than we expected, and we arrived a bit late.  We made ourselves at home on the pew that was placed against the back wall of the small sanctuary. A quick scan of the room always comes first when you visit a new church. The building was well kept and very presentable. A precious Sr. Saint was teaching, and, by the way, did so with a careful, sincere style that was easy to listen to, and most enjoyable.

Several folks were scattered around the sanctuary.  But what caught and held my attention for a good while was as young man seated in powered wheelchair - strategically parked in the center isle just a few feet away from the teacher.

It's not an unfamiliar sight to see someone with a crippling condition having to rely on the support of such a device. But sadly, it is not something you see very often in this setting. I watched as his head would lean to one side mostly, and I noticed that his hands were not fully functional. But there he was, listening intently as the Scriptures were read, and comments were made.  I believe I did hear him make some audible sounds along with others who were affirming the teacher's comments.

When the class concluded, I did what I do, I made my way toward the front shaking hands with the people. As I approached the young man in the chair, he reached up to me as much as he could, and offered me his hand. I noted the weakness of his grip, but the message came through strong clear as he greeted me with - "Welcome Brother Pense."

We enjoyed our time of worship and a very proficient pastor's remarks as he lead the people in prayer. The Lord helped me as I spoke of the foundation stones of a church, help, hope, and healing. We had an excellent prayer time at the conclusion of the service. When the last amens were said, I stepped into the isle again to greet the young man who had sat quietly as I spoke.

As I was about to step on down the isle, I listened intently to him as he asked, "Can I pray for you?" My heart melted as I watched and listened as he, with great effort formed the words he prayed - for me. Then, I heard that heavenly language - quietly, but clearly. To say I was touched would be a vast understatement. I should have been praying for him. I did get to return that favor later, however, before we left for home.

The good folks had prepared a nice dinner - church folk can do that you know. We were able to visit with the pastor and several of the people around the table. I did glance over at my new friend who had come in last, and was placed at the end of one of the tables. I watched as his caregiver helped him eat.

As we finished and were about to leave, his caregiver came over and told me that Jonathan wanted to tell me goodbye. I went over and talked a bit with him. He asked if we would be coming back. He said, "I hope it won't be a long time." Then he said, "I'll be here when you come back unless I go to my other home."

It was a very good day. It was a bonus blessing day for me. Pray for Jonathan, and count your blessings. I plan to do just that.

Convention Snapshot!

The overall schedule is somewhat different from years past giving more time to ministering the Word, worshiping and praying. We will have three anointed guests. Including the address Sister Creasy will be giving on Thursday evening, we will be experiencing seven Holy Ghost inspired messages (ten, if you include our devotionals), numerous worship opportunities, special music, ministry reports, video presentations, youth camp reviews, four sessions of children’s ministry, a separate youth service, and more!
We will have a long session on Saturday. This will address several needs. It will get our pastors and church family on the road home (or to some time of relaxation) earlier in the day. And, It will allow for an extended time of ministry for Sister Palma when she challenges our youth leadership, pastors who are attending the luncheon, and any youth who desire to attend. This will actually be an extension of our convention—aimed at strengthening our efforts in ministering to youth. It’s going to be really good!
I hope you have joined me in our “7 Hours In 7 Days” of prayer and fasting. Oh, how we need the Lord to bless our people in the convention! I am sincerely asking that you set aside some prime time to pray and seek God in behalf of the convention. Please—pray for Adana and I. We cannot do this without the help and inspiration of the Lord, and you!
SPECIAL NOTE: If you have Youth Leaders, Children’s Ministry Leaders, or, if you are planning on attending one of the special “meal” ministry sessions at the convention, there is still time to register online or, just have them call our office.

Every Hour - "I Need Thee"

Annie Hawks wrote:
One day as a young wife and mother of 37 years of age, I was busy with my regular household tasks. Suddenly, I became so filled with the sense of nearness to the Master that, wondering how one could live without Him, either in joy or pain, these words, “I Need Thee Every Hour,” were ushered into my mind, the thought at once taking full possession of me.
After writing the lyrics, Hawks gave them to her pastor, Robert Lowry, who added the tune and refrain. The hymn was first published at the National Baptist Sunday School Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, in November 1872. Some years later, after the death of her husband, Hawks wrote:
I did not understand at first why this hymn had touched the great throbbing heart of humanity. It was not until long after, when the shadow fell over my way, the shadow of a great loss, that I understood something of the comforting power in the words which I had been permitted to give out to others in my hour of sweet serenity and peace.

I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.
Refrain
I need Thee, O I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee;
O bless me now, my Savior,
I come to Thee.
I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby;
Temptations lose their power when Thou art nigh.

Heartland Camp Staff Video

We have pressed our way through to getting this video ready for all of our youth camp staff. We had some extreme difficulties in producing the webcast last Saturday, and even the videos we did for a backup. I do regret those failures! However, Youth Camp is so important to us - I cannot give up on reaching out to our great folks, young and old, across the region that love the camping ministry.

I have a link below that will take you directly to our Camp Ministries Channel on the Heartland Internet Campus. Our staff can view the video - AND - there is an Adobe Link on the viewing page that will allow anyone to view or download the manual.

It's going to be a great camping season in the Heartland! Thank you Camp Directors and Staff! Thank you Pastors and Church family for supporting this powerful ministry!

Heartland Youth Camp Staff Training Event

Our Camp Staff Training is here! Tomorrow morning the Camp Directors will be participating in a live webcast that will be going to all of our four states. Then on Saturday afternoon we are inviting all of those wishing to work in one of our camps around the region to join us for an intensive training session. The Staff Training Session begins at 1 PM.  We will be introducing our new Regional Camp Manual.

NOTE: The Camp Staff Manual can be viewed directly from our Regional Website.

www.heartlandcogop.org

As soon as the website opens, you will see links that will give you vital information about the Training session. It has a link that will take you to the Camp Manual where you can read, or even download the manual. It has a link that will allow you to download the Camp Covenant. That is a promise made by every Camp Staff Member before they serve in camp. And then there is a link that will take you to the Heartland Camp Ministry Channel on our Internet Campus. IT’S ALL RIGHT THERE!

We are looking forward to an awesome day with our Camp Directors and Staff from all over the region. What a great cause! Here’s just a snippet from the new camp manual;

“Campers will participate in a range of enjoyable summer adventures designed to foster social interaction, facilitate personal growth, develop educational and recreational skills, and the discovery of the plan and purpose God has for their lives. We want to provide a fun, life-building experience. Realizing that some campers have never seen the true love of Christ displayed, we want our plans, programs, and personal witnesses to represent Christ well. The end goal is that we fulfill the Great Commission by “making disciples,” and teaching the “all things” of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that includes love, grace, forgiveness, and purpose for living.”

Join us. Say a prayer for us! Our Camping Ministry is worth it!

GOOD NEWS FROM THE DARKNESS!

Should we be concerned, disappointed, and, sometimes angered by the harsh reality of the gospel of this world that says, wrong is right , and right is wrong?

Yes.

Should we not resist, with passion, this power plays by the prince of darkness?

Yes.

Should we not even resist verbally, and be actively involved (physically) in refuting the lies that are being swallowed hook line and sinker, by those who's carnal appetites are being quenched, and are simply revealing the fruit of their seared conscious?

Yes.

Nauseating - that's the emotion I feel when I see God's absolutes being compromised, and the innocence of children stolen by thieving, selfish  parents, and other powerful influencers, who are practicing open rebellion to all that is holy and right.

But here's the 'kicker,"

In the midst of it all - all the chaos, half truths, and sometimes blatant lies, I feel the spirit of encouragement coming upon me. The Bible says ...

". . . But where sin increased and abounded, grace (God’s unmerited favor) has surpassed it and increased the more and superabounded," (Romans 5:20 AMP)

So, is there any good news coming from the ever-increasing shadows that hides the truth? Absolutely YES!

ETERNAL TRUTH:   The darker the night, the brighter the light.

So, my dear friend, the darkness does hold good news for the Believer. The enemy wins temporary victories, but the war is in the hand of the Almighty God of Light, Truth, and Power.  AMEN!

New Church Plant In The Heartland

Tonight I was privileged to officiate in the organization of our newest church in The Heartland America Region. Rev. Jose Bravo was appointed as pastor. This group has been meeting at the Olathe Church for the past several years, and has operated as a Mission Church, under Brother Bravo for the past year. Pastor John Newson and the Olathe Church are to be commended for their care and nurture of this great group of people. The Olathe (Hispanic) Church of God of Prophecy now serves as a beacon of hope reaching out to the Hispanic community in Olathe and surrounding communities. Thank you Lord for dedicated and trustworthy servants.

Pastor's Wife Home-Going Celebration

I spent most of the day with a wonderful family. I was privileged to participate in the home-going celebration for Elvira Wagner. Elvira was Pastor Leonard Wagner's wife. The Wagners have served as Pastors of our Emporia, Kansas, church for over 40 years.
The chapel was filled to capacity and more. The overflow room was completely packed also. Pastor Wagner participated in the service and shared heartwarming memories. The Wagner's two sons and two daughters, their families, including 8 grandchildren were present honor their precious mother and grandmother. Surely, Heaven gets sweeter as more and more of our loved ones go there.
Pastor Wagner will be facing a tremendous change in his life as he adjusts to a life without Elvira. I am confident that his family will stay close to him as they are a very caring and loving people. I know your prayers would be appreciated.

6 days and counting down to our next S.H.A.R.E Meeting! I am looking forward to being with our great pastors and leaders form Districts 9 & 10. We have invited our pastors  & leaders from District 9 to come on "up" to Olathe next Saturday and join us for a great day of ministry, and fellowship. (I think there's going to be food involved, too!) Pastor Larry Duncan will be presenting on Saturday morning, and I will be sharing in the afternoon. I really do believe we are going to have a wonderful time! Hoe to see you there. It all stats at 9:30 AM.

District 9 SHARE Meeting Re-sheduled

Due to the bad weather and remaining snow & ice, our SHARE and Fellowship Meeting scheduled for next Saturday in Wichita is being e-scheduled for a later date. Pastors & Leaders of District 9 are welcome to come on up to Olathe on Saturday, March 9. We would most certainly be happy for our Districts 9 & 10 Pastors to enjoy fellowship together.

Allen Oklahoma Visit

Adana & I had a great day with Pastor Ed & Jan Rutherford and the Allen COGOP church family today. Two Deacons were ordained, Charles Bizzell, and Delwayne Johnson. The fellowship was excellent. We have an awesome church family in Allen.
